The Royal Burgh of Dingwall, the administrative centre of Ross and Cromarty was the birthplace of MacBeth, ruler of Scotland from 1040 to 1057. Nearby is the Black-Isle, not an island but a long peninsula ideal for quiet sightseeing and coastal walks. Near Muir of Ord see how whisky is made at the Glen Ord Distillery visitors centre.

Loch Maree with its numerous islands dominated by the austere mountain Slioch and towering Beinn Eighe over whose vast bulk spreads a National Nature Reserve ,surpassing beauty and grace, with the high peaks reflecting a white glare of gneiss and quartzite,where the wildlife of the area roams freely.

                              

Within easy driving distance is the picturesque Eilean Donan Castle on Loch Duich, featured in films such as"Highlander"and"Braveheart".

The small picturesque fishing village of Plockton with its famous palm tree lined frontage and fame as the location for the television series "Hamish MacBeth"

                                      

Corrieshalloch Gorge and the high falls of Measach are two impressive pieces of scenery on the way to the fishing village of Ullapool. Another falls further south can be found near Garve Rogie falls, where salmon can be seen jumping up-stream so they can spawn.

               

Most widespread of the `wild` animals must be the red deer, which roam freely even around Ledgowans own grounds during the winter months. Ledgowan also boasts its own family of Pine-Martins, an animal part of the Weasel family and quite rare.

                                             

The sports enthusiast has a wide range of choices, Ledgowan has fishing rights on the nearby Loch a Chroisg, where brown trout, pike and perch can be caught. Within an hours drive the golfer has numerous courses to choose from, Gairloch provides a nine-hole links course, Lochcarron a small nine-hole course, Strathpeffer a mountainous eighteen hole and more courses can be found near Inverness. Inverness also offers other sports and fitness centres. For the football fan, visit Britain`s most northerly full-time league team, Ross-County, who play in Dingwall. Near Ledgowans doorstep is Fionn Bheinn, one of the easier Munro mountains, suitable for the beginner or the serious `Munro Bagger`. The famous Torridon mountain range is only a short car journey away for the more advanced hill walker/climber.

                       

Athletic competitions have a long history in Scotland. There is a tradition that King Malcolm III, as long ago as the 11th century held a contest on the Braes of Mar to find his fastest runners and toughest fighting men. The Braemar Gathering, under Royal patronage since the days of Queen Victoria, is one of the highlights of the Highland year, but there are dozens of other large and small all over the Highlands in the summer months, Lochcarron and Strathpeffer being the closest to Ledgowan.
